چکیده
ABSTRACT To conceal themselves on the seafloor, European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, express a large repertoire of body patterns. Scenes with 3D relief are especially challenging because it is not possible either to directly recover visual depth from 2D retinal image or for cuttlefish alter its shape resemble nearby objects. Here, we characterised camouflage responses relief, and cast shadows, which complementary cues. Animals were recorded in presence cylindrical objects fixed (15 mm) diameter, but varying height, greyscale strength corresponding pictorial images. With cylinders, expressed ‘3D’ pattern, distinct previously described Uniform, Mottle Disruptive This pattern was insensitive variation object contrast shadow, except when shadows most pronounced, case patterns resembled those used backgrounds. suggests that stationary as cues by rather than matching image, response two-stage process whereby animal first classifies physical environment then selects an appropriate pattern. Each type triggered specific may compete, allowing select suitable camouflage, so categorical continuously variable. These findings give unique insight into how invertebrate senses generate response.

15 صفحه اولThe perception of cast shadows.
When an object casts its shadow on a background surface, the shadow can be informative about the shape of the object, the shape of the background surface and the spatial arrangement of the object relative to the background. Among all these roles, we found that cast shadows were perceptually most relevant for the recovery of spatial arrangement, especially when the shadow is in motion. This find...
متن کاملPerception of edges and visual texture in the camouflage of the common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.
The cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, provides a fascinating opportunity to investigate the mechanisms of camouflage as it rapidly changes its body patterns in response to the visual environment. We investigated how edge information determines camouflage responses through the use of spatially high-pass filtered 'objects' and of isolated edges. We then investigated how the body pattern responds to ...

How does an animal conceal itself from visual detection by other animals? This review paper seeks to identify general principles that may apply in this broad area. It considers mechanisms of visual encoding, of grouping and object encoding, and of search. In most cases, the evidence base comes from studies of humans or species whose vision approximates to that of humans. The effort is hampered ...
متن کاملPerception of visual texture and the expression of disruptive camouflage by the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.
Juvenile cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) camouflage themselves by changing their body pattern according to the background. This behaviour can be used to investigate visual perception in these molluscs and may also give insight into camouflage design. Edge detection is an important aspect of vision, and here we compare the body patterns that cuttlefish produced in response to checkerboard backgro...
